Eyeglasses for the needy
A primary focus for most Lions Clubs is providing eyeglasses for those in need, and primarily for children in need. This can be done through eyeglass recycling programs, but is more often simply a matter of the club paying for an eye exam and glasses from a local optometrist. Referrals most often come from school nurses, but can be made through other agencies.
With a fundamental mission of Lionism being the prevention of all preventable blindness, most clubs also provide or sponsor vision screening services. The most common causes of preventable blindness can be detected and treated before blindness occurs. Lions Club vision screenings are designed to catch these early indicators of potential vision loss, and to detect other vision problems, all of which are referred for follow up care by an appropriate specialist.
Low Vision Center
Low Vision is a visual impairment resulting from eye disease, trauma or stroke. It is not correctable by surgery, standard eyeglasses or contact lenses. Macular Degeneration, Diabetes, Glaucoma, Strokes and Cataracts are among the leading causes of vision loss in adults. Until cures are found, clients need to get through each day with a sense of independence and safety. The staff at the Lions Low Vision Center can teach the visually impaired person new ways to utilize remaining eyesight. The center provides the necessary aids and devices that can increase independence and ease activities of daily living.
Many people cannot afford proper eye care. This limits their vision, their ability to work and their quality of life. Your old eyeglasses can literally change a life. The Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center’s program begins with local Lions interacting with the citizens of their community. The Lions Clubs collect eyeglasses from the public and send them to a collection center in Midland, Texas. The collected eyeglasses are sorted, cleaned, processed and packaged for delivery to Lions-led vision clinics all over Texas. Glasses are also provided to Lions in Mexico for distribution there.
Thanksgiving Food Baskets
The holidays are a time to be thankful for what we have. Many families struggle to put food on the table on a regular basis. At the holidays, Lions help out. Oftentimes in conjunction with other community organizations, you’ll find Lions collecting food donations, sorting them into baskets and delivering them to families in need.
Texas Lions Camp
Texas Lions Camp is a residential camping facility for children with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer. The Camp is located on over 500 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, and is designed to introduce the “Can Do” philosophy to children dealing with special medical conditions. Children with special needs from all over the State of Texas are invited to attend one of 9 weeks, which we hope will become one of their life-long childhood memories. A week designed for fun, exploration and challenge.
