What Lions Do: Fight Blindness and Preserve Sight

Helen Keller

Helen Keller

This is the first in a series of articles explaining what Lions do for their communities. One common central goal for all Lions worldwide is preventing blindness and preserving sight.

In 1925, Helen Keller stood before the annual convention of the nascent International Association of Lions Clubs and spoke of her work with the American Foundation for the Blind, ending her talk with her now-famous challenge to us:

“The opportunity I bring to you, Lions, is this: To foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?”

The Lions rallied to the cause and have taken up arms at every battlefront in the fight. From providing vision care and eyeglasses to those in need, to sponsoring vision screening clinics, to funding research and providing services and equipment to those with low vision, and even raising awareness about the causes of preventable blindness, like diabetes. Lions everywhere and through the years have committed themselves to preventing preventable blindness and helping the visually challenged lead healthy, productive lives.

Spaghetti Fest a success!

The Inaugural SouthTown Lions Spaghetti Fest {“The Fest”) for the Cilla C Ranch was a success.  Raising more than $1,200 for the total event, the proceeds were split between Cilla C Ranch and Jimmy’s Family Pizza.

The Fest was the first event to benefit another organization other than the Lions and included vendors, a raffle and an opportunity to showcase what the SouthTown Lions can do when they work together.

The vendors goods included art, fashion, Funnel Cakes, Mystic Knights and Jimmy’s lovely mom and sister and one of Jimmy’s employees selling art.

Additionally, guest Lions from Northside dropped in to enjoy the great food and festivities.  It was a great time.  Just check out our photos on the Latin Fusion TV website: www.latinfusiontv.com ~gallery page.

Cilla C Ranch is a 501(c)3 which builds character, self-esteem and development of youth through an equestrian based program.  The Ranch does a good job, as was evident with the behavior of the youth volunteers.  Many of the parents and volunteers commented on how well behaved they were.

All in all – it was a great event!

Inaugural Spaghetti Dinner Fest

You are invited to the SouthTown Lions Club Inaugural Spaghetti Dinner Fest to be held Sunday, November 13, at Jimmy’s Family Pizza from 12 pm to 5 pm.  The fundraiser is for Cilla C Ranch, helping youngsters achieve their goals, raise their self esteem and get into college.

SouthTown Lions will transform Jimmy’s into a fun house with vendors, raffles and music to add to the day. Come buy and meet the gang, join the club or eat some pizza – the day is all good and the food is great!

This is a fundraising idea you can get you club involved with.  All it takes is a little work and some dedication.  Jimmy’s Family Pizza is here to help.  You sell the tickets – Jimmy makes the food! Pretty easy.

Special Thanks to all those that helped sell tickets and got involved!

Thanks Lions
